This was around 23:45 on a beach off the beaten track. The rain fell as these amazing penguins came home to feed their chicks and partners. These penguins are the smallest of their species but are extremely vocal. In this recording you can hear the penguins walk by the microphones and sneeze. The penguins first arrive in rafts and walk together on the beach before splitting off to their burrows. Through the night you can hear this amazing sound.
Recorded with:
Sound Devices 722
Sennheiser microphones MKH40/30 in an MS pattern.
Rycote windjammer
Tripod mounted
Original recording 44.1k 24 bit
Recordist: Martyn Stewart

New Zealand 2009

This is a strange one (for most folks) Recorded on Sunrise (Mount Rainier NP)
This is basically “Nothing” but in my world, nothing is beautiful. There are not many places on this planet that you can set up your microphones and not hear people! The other reason I'm posting this is because it is a great test for the recorder i use and the microphones. There is no “Hiss” from either the microphones or the recorder. At the beginning of the recording i have placed a -30 decibel tone and set the record volume to 56.7 dba . What is amazing is that all previous recordings on this website have basically the same settings. In quiet environments you need to know that what you hear is what you get.
The time was 10:45 p.m.. The temperature: 39f. The skies were clear.
Humidity was 48%.
Microphones used: MKH-40/30 MS combination.
Recorder SD 722.
Sample rate: 44.1K 24 bit.
Recordist: Martyn Stewart

The cayman islands are set in the beautiful West Indies, temperature is basically consistent all year round with high’s in the 80’s and lows in the high 70’s. September is a great time for amazing thunderstorms. Here we have the start of such high on the West of the islands around Barker’s National park.
Bananaquit, green heron, northern mockingbird, west indian woodpecker, smooth-billed Ani, northern flicker sing to the tune of the weather. Cicada sound off their electrical power-line sounds across the landscape.
Recorded with SD 788t with mkh-40/30 microphones in an MS pattern.
microphones are protected with a Rycote windjammer, tripod mounted.
Original recording was made at 44.1k 24 bit and re-sampled here to mp3.
Recordist Martyn Stewart.
